Hard Surface Pre-Installation Guide

Congratulations on your new floor.  Please Read the following tips carefully and request clarification when needed.  These tips will help you be prepared and help the installer do a better job.
Preparing for your hard surface flooring installation
After the order is placed:
  • For Wood/Laminate, Vinyl orders (except tile) our installation department will need to arrange to drop off your product before your installation date. This allows your product to acclimate to your home’s temperature and humidity levels before installation. Please leave this product in the home where it is being installed.
Determination of who is moving specific furniture:
  • Dealer is not responsible for any prior damages and will review work site together with customer.
Prepare your home:
  • If you are having vinyl, laminate or wood installed and YOU are removing the old carpet; please remove all carpet, padding, staples and tack strips.Leave all wall molding in place unless you contracted to have these replaced.
  • Remove all breakable items such as: vases, lamps, collectibles, dishes, etc.
  • China cabinets, hutches and bookcases need to be emptied.
  • Make separate arrangements to move pool tables, pianos, water beds, aquariums.
  • Kitchen/Utilities: Please disengage washers/dryers, hot water heaters (where necessary).Disconnect ice maker and all gas appliances. Our installers do not disconnect or reconnect any of these items.
  • Detach wiring from TV’s, computers and all other electronics and move these items from areas where installation will take place.
  • Closets do not need to be emptied; however, all items need to be removed from the closet floor.
  • Please remove any hanging items which could obstruct floor installation such as drapes.
  • If you are having flooring installed in a bedroom, all bed linens should be removed from the bed.
  • Determine who will remove and dispose of the existing carpet, cushion or current floor.Disposal companies are responsible for taking away all materials removed unless other arrangements are made with salesperson.
  • Please make sure the installer has access to heat, power, light, water and ventilation available.
  • The room the new floor is being installed in needs to be an average temperature of 65˚F degrees
  • Price excludes floor preparation or other work necessary to correct unforeseen floor surface defects not apparent during original measure. The member will be advised of any and all extra charges at the time of install unless an estimate has been provided by the salesman in advance.Additional charges may be incurred as flooring installation proceeds and unforeseen challenges arrive.
Day of installation:
  • It is impractical to give you an exact amount of time the install will take place since every job is unique. Our normal install window of time is 8 a.m. to Noon or Noon to 5 p.m.This time is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances and we recommend allowing a full day for your installation unless otherwise stated by your salesperson.
  • Check your new floor to insure the look, color, and style are correct before the installation.
  • Most installations will have left over material. Please make sure you save some of this product in the event a repair is needed at a later date.
  • The new flooring product and adhesive may emit temporary odors and dust. This is normal and will typically dissipate within a short time frame – even sooner with open windows and use of fans.
  • The installer will gladly remove hinged doors and replace them after the installation. The member is responsible for trimming doors and raising/lowering baseboard moldings due to any increase/decrease in the finished flooring height. This includes adjustments to any sliding or bi-fold closet doors. In addition, the installer will not plane doors.
  • Color filler is required in all installations for minor gaps or inconsistencies in the natural characteristic of the hardwood or milled product.
  • When there is removal of existing flooring or sanding of sub floors to be done prior to installation there will be dust. Please cover or remove anything that you do not want to get dusty.
  • Additional charges may apply if customer preparations are not completed prior to our arrival for installation.
Characteristics of wood, laminate floors, vinyl and luxury tile/tile:
  • Flooring is a product that individual pieces can be different. There are many different shades (some lighter, some darker) of flooring within each and every box. There are also varying grains on wood flooring which add to the natural effect. These variations in color and grains are quite normal and add to the beauty of wood floors.Specific shading or graining cannot be selected.
Protecting your investment:
  • Please read and understand your dealer supplied manufacturer’s warranty.A copy of your warranty can be found on the Manufacturer’s Website.
  • With wood, laminate, vinyl and luxury tile/tile, care must be given to prevent scratching and denting.Furniture must be lifted, not slid on these floors and this includes items on roller such as entertainment centers and refrigerators. We recommend that to protect your new floor you place felt pads under furniture and chair legs and replace felt pads regularly
  • Many woods (specifically exotic species) will darken over time.Upon opening a box, exotic species will appear lighter than expected color and will gradually darken to their rich, full color. The darkening occurs fairly quickly and is accelerated by light. This is a characteristic of all exotic woods.
  • Cleaning your new wood, tile, laminate or vinyl floor is simple.Never use a vacuum with a beater bar on wood or laminate. We suggest a vacuum with a suitable flooring attachment.Vacuum these floors regularly since dirt and sand are abrasive and can harm your floors over time.Never soak or wet your floors and never pour cleaning solutions directly on to the floor. Some manufacturers suggest a damp terry cloth towel when necessary to clean the floors.Do not use oil soaps, liquid or paste wax products or other household cleaners that contain citrus oils, lemon oil, tung oil, silicon, or ammonia.Do not use 2 in 1 cleaners with polish that may contain acrylics or urethane polish to restore gloss. Each manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations may vary. Please refer to the manufactures website link at the end of this document for cleaning and maintenance instructions.
  • Keep pets’ nails trimmed, paws clean and free of dirt, gravel, grease, oil, and stains.
  • Remove shoes with spiked or damaged heels before walking on floor.
  • Exposure to the sun and its UV rays accelerates the oxidation and aging of wood. This can cause the stain and/or wood to fade and/or to change color. We recommend that you rearrange rugs and furniture periodically so the floor ages evenly.
  • The installation site must always be kept at a constant temperature of 60˚-75˚F degrees with a humidity level of 30-55%
