Carpet Pre-Install Guide & Links

Congratulations on your new floor!  Please read the following tips carefully and request clarification when needed.  These tips will help you be prepared and help the installer do a better job. 
 
Preparing For Your Carpet Installation
 
Determination of who is moving specific furniture:
  • Dealer is not responsible for any prior damages and will review work site together with customer.
 
Prepare Your Home:
  • If you are having carpet installed and YOU are removing the old carpet; please remove all carpet, padding, and staples.  Leave the tack strips and wall molding in place.
  • Remove all breakable items such as: vases, lamps, collectibles, dishes, etc.
  • China cabinets, hutches and bookcases need to be emptied.
  • Make separate arrangements to move pool tables, pianos, water beds, aquariums.
  • Detach wiring from TV’s, computers and all other electronics and move these items from areas where installation will take place.
  • Closets do not need to be emptied; however, all items need to be removed from the closet floor.
  • Please remove any hanging items which could obstruct floor installation such as drapes.
  • If you are having flooring installed in a bedroom, all bed linens should be removed from the bed.
  • Determine who will remove and dispose of the existing carpet, cushion. Your local disposal company provides this service.
  • In most cases, carpet seams will have a slight peak that will be visible.  Please review and approve seam placement and carpet layout. 
  • Please make sure the installer has access to heat, power, light, and ventilation.
  • The room the carpet is being installed in needs to be an average temperature of 65˚F degrees
  • Price excludes floor preparation or other work necessary to correct unforeseen floor surface defects not apparent during original measure.  The member will be advised of any and all extra charges at the time of install unless an estimate has been provided by the salesman in advance.  Additional charges may be incurred as flooring installation proceeds and unforeseen challenges arrive.
 
 
Day Of Installation:
  • It is impractical to give you an exact amount of time the install will take place since every job is unique. Our normal install window of time is 8 a.m. to Noon or Noon to 5 p.m.  This time is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances and we recommend allowing a full day for your installation unless otherwise stated by your salesperson.
  • Check your new carpet to insure texture, color, and style are correct before the installation.  Please note there may be a minor and normal shade variation between the store sample and the finished product.  Carpet needs to breathe and is normally rolled up tight.  Give your carpet 1-2 weeks to fill up with moisture from the air.
  • Most installations will have left over material.  Please make sure you save some of this product in the event a repair is ever needed at a later date.
  • The new flooring product and adhesive may emit temporary odors and dust.  This is normal and will typically dissipate within a short time frame – even sooner with open windows and use of fans.
  • Shedding of loose fibers is common on pile type carpet.  This is a temporary process and increasing your vacuuming will resolve this.  Typically, this shedding concludes in 2-8 weeks.  The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) states that this process can last for as long as a year.  For more information please visit carpet-rug.com
  • The installer will gladly remove hinged doors and replace them after the installation.  The member is responsible for trimming doors and raising/lowering baseboard moldings due to any increase/decrease in the finished carpet height.  This includes adjustments to any sliding or bi-fold closet doors. 
  • Scuffing of Baseboards, Wall Paint and Wallpaper may occur during a normal installation.  Installers will use caution; however, they will not be responsible for minor damage.  The member is responsible for repairs and touch up. 
  • When there is removal of existing flooring or sanding of sub floors to be done prior to installation there will be dust.  Please cover or remove anything that you do not want to get dusty.
  • Additional charges may apply if member preparations are not completed prior to our arrival for installation or trip charges will be applied if no one is home when we arrive.[1]
 
Protecting your Investment:
  • Please read and understand your dealer supplied manufacturer’s warranty.  A copy of your warranty can be found on the Manufacturer’s Website. 
  • Avoid tracking dirt onto your new flooring by using a walk-off mat at all entrances.  Be sure to clean mats weekly.
  • Vacuum frequently.  You should vacuum at least once a week with a vacuum cleaner that has a high airflow, high-efficiency filtration, rotating brush or brush/beater bar.  Follow device instructions for use of proper attachments and height adjustment.  Set your vacuum for the type of carpet pile you are cleaning.  The higher the pile, the higher you need to adjust the base or vacuuming head.  Note: Carpets with thick loop pile, frieze, and shag construction may become fuzzy or worn with the use of a beater bar vacuum.  It is recommended that the use of a suction-only vacuum should be used for these styles.  Only purchase vacuums that have a CRI seal of approval.   For vacuum suggestions please refer to the manufactures website links at the end of this document.
  • Reduce periods of direct sunlight.  Protect your carpet from prolonged periods of direct sunlight with blinds, shades or awnings.
  • Remove Spills Promptly.  No Carpet is stain proof, although many are stain resistant, allowing time to act.  Prompt attention to spots and spills is essential.  Most spilled materials will stain or discolor carpet or can lead to increased soiling if not removed promptly.  Check your warranty for cleaning specifications.  Care and cleaning instructions are included in the warranty brochure.
  • Prevent Contact with Household Chemicals.  Many household chemicals may permanently stain or remove color from your carpet.  These are not covered under any type of warranty.  These substances included, but are not limited to: bleaches, caustic chemicals, insecticides, paints, shoe polish, lipstick, plant food, iodine, very strong dyes, acids, feces, oil-based substances, and vomit.
  • Periodic Professional Cleaning.  The hot water extraction method (steam cleaning) done by a professional is recommended every 12 months.  Review your warranty for specifications and procedures related to your carpet.  Note: A claim cannot be filed on a carpet that is over two years old without proof of professional cleaning.  If the Carpet has not been cleaned within the first 24 months, your warranty will be void.
